Saxony-Anhalt Consumer Prices Show Modest Inflation Decrease in May 2025

Consumer prices in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt decreased slightly from April 2025, according to the State Statistical Office. The annual inflation rate dropped from 2.9% in April to 2.8% in May, with the index level remaining constant at 123.5 (base year 2020 = 100).

The moderate decrease in inflation was primarily influenced by a decrease in prices for certain goods and services. While other goods and services continued to drive inflation, they experienced a more modest increase compared to previous months, at 11.9%.

The price hikes were predominantly seen in services for the elderly and other facilities (+30.1%), transport insurance services (+17.8%), and funeral services and cemetery fees (+9.5%). Food and non-alcoholic beverages also demonstrated above-average annual price growth, with a 4.5% increase.

Conversely, prices for furniture, lighting, appliances, and other household equipment increased below average, with a minimal annual increase of 0.3%. Declining prices for energy (-5.7%) and its related segments, such as housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels (+0.9%), as well as transport (+0.7%), also helped to Keep inflation levels in check.

Comparing prices across categories from May to April 2025, the prices for transport dropped by 1.2%, with an average 2.4% decrease in gasoline prices and a 2.0% decrease in diesel prices. On the contrary, alcoholic beverages and tobacco became 0.8% more expensive on average, while accommodation services rose by 0.7%.

While specific data for Saxony-Anhalt is limited, the broader German economic context provides insights into the factors influencing inflation. Major contributors to inflation in Germany include energy prices, food prices, services and transport, and inflation rate fluctuations. In the coming months, inflation rates in Germany are expected to hover around 2%.

Energy costs, including fuel prices, have been on the rise across Germany, affecting both households and businesses. Similarly, food prices can be influenced by factors like climate change, which can result in crop failures and increased costs. The introduction of the "Deutschland-Ticket" has also led to a rise in transport-related services costs, affecting the entire country, including Saxony-Anhalt.

  1. In the German economic context, exceeding 13% of other goods and services, such as certain facilities for the elderly, transport insurance services, and funeral services, have shown significant increases in price, contributing to the overall inflation rate.
  2. Conversely, some household items, like furniture, lighting, appliances, and other equipment, have a low fat content by weight and have demonstrated only minor annual increases, helping to keep overall consumer prices from exceeding the 2% inflation rate expected in the coming months.
