Energy company NorthWestern agrees to a plan of action for supporting Quantica's data center project in Montana.
Montana is set to witness a significant step forward in its tech sector with the proposed data center development by Quantica Infrastructure. The project, under the affiliate Big Sky Digital Infrastructure (BSDI), is a 5,000-acre campus near Billings, Montana.
The project aims to integrate site development, renewable energy generation, battery storage, and high-speed fiber connectivity to support AI and cloud computing workloads. NorthWestern Energy, a provider of essential energy infrastructure and services, has signed a letter of intent to provide up to 1,000 megawatts of power for the project.
Construction of the data center is scheduled to begin in 2026, contingent on regulatory reviews, permitting, and infrastructure development. Initial electric service is expected to start the same year, with the planned expansion targeting 1 gigawatt capacity by 2030.
NorthWestern Energy is currently conducting a transmission study to assess how best to meet Quantica's energy needs. The collaboration between NorthWestern Energy and Quantica Infrastructure is expected to create meaningful employment opportunities and improvements in telecommunications and power infrastructure for Montanans.
The project will initially support 500 megawatts of renewable power and battery storage, expanding to 1 gigawatt by around 2030. Quantica Infrastructure, a company that delivers integrated digital infrastructure solutions for AI, hyperscale, and data center operators across the U.S., is not directly mentioned in the previous bullet points.
