England's Women's Euro 2025 Group Discussion with Sarina Wiegman
England's head coach Sarina Wiegman expressed her excitement over being drawn into a "fascinating, thrilling" group for the Women's Euro 2025 in Switzerland.
The Lionesses, who clinched the latest edition of the Euros in 2022, find themselves in Group D alongside historical rivals France, neighboring Wales, and the Netherlands, who emerged victorious in 2017 under Wiegman's management.
"I believe we have a captivating, thrilling group," stated Wiegman after the draw at the Swiss Tech Convention Centre in Lausanne.
"It's a bit like the Nations League groups – it's exceptionally tough. You merely have to embrace it and prepare for July 5. That's my strategy," she added.
Wiegman, the only manager to guide two distinct nations to Euros triumphs, conveyed her faith in the Lionesses squad.
"As we've witnessed, we have some talented, younger players making their way onto the field and gaining valuable playing time. Every team embarks on a tournament with the intention of winning it, and we're no exception. I'm confident in my team and eager for next summer," the 55-year-old Dutchwoman expressed.
With Wales securing their spot in their maiden major tournament, Wiegman shared her delight over the potential rivalry with their neighbors.
"To begin with, my heartfelt congratulations to them – they've qualified for the first time in their history, which is, of course, fantastic," said Wiegman. "There'll be a certain tension on the pitch when we face off. I'm anticipating that match."
In other groups, World Cup champions Spain confront Portugal, Belgium, and two-time Euro runners-up Italy in Group B.
Switzerland, the hosts, will square off against former world champions Norway, Iceland, and Finland in Group A, while record eight-time Euro champions Germany are in Group C with recurrent rivals and 1984 winners Sweden, familiar opponents Denmark, and debutants Poland.
The two top teams from each final tournament group will advance to the elimination phase.
