Enhanced financial support allocated for the Atlantic Immigration Program in Canada
The Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) is an employer-driven immigration pathway for foreign workers who wish to live permanently in one of Canada's Atlantic provinces: New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, or Prince Edward Island.
The AIP has recently announced changes to the minimum funds required for immigration, effective as of July 29, 2025. These changes depend on the size of the family.
Minimum Funds Required for AIP in 2025
- For a single applicant, the minimum funds required to qualify for AIP in 2025 is $3,815, an increase from $3,672 in 2024.
- For a family of two, the minimum funds required is $4,750.
- For a family of three, the minimum funds required is $5,840.
- For a family of four, the minimum funds required is $7,090.
- For each additional family member over 7, the minimum funds required is $1,028 more.
Eligibility for the AIP
To be eligible for the AIP, a foreign national needs a job offer from a designated employer in Atlantic Canada, which must be endorsed by the province. Candidates for the AIP must be either a skilled worker (with or without experience in Canada) or a recent graduate of a recognized post-secondary institution in Atlantic Canada.
Once an eligible candidate has an endorsed job offer, they can apply directly to the federal government for Permanent Residency (PR).
Proof of Funds and Settlement Funds
To prove accessibility of funds, the AIP does not accept equity on real estate or borrowed money as proof of settlement funds. Instead, candidates must show official letters from banks or financial institutions where they have an account. The AIP requires official letters from banks or financial institutions to prove funds, which must be printed on the institution's letterhead and include the applicant's name, the institution's contact information, outstanding debts, and details for each current banking and investment account.
If a spouse is coming with the applicant, they can show money from a family dollar account. The applicant may also be able to show money from an account under a spouse's name if they can prove access to the money.
Additional Criteria for the AIP
The AIP has additional criteria regarding education, language proficiency, and settlement funds. Candidates for the AIP must meet the language requirements of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 for speaking, listening, reading, and writing in either English or French.
Foreign nationals who are already working in Canada on a valid work permit are exempt from the settlement funds requirement for AIP.
Work Permits and PR Application Process
Candidates who have applied to the AIP can also apply for a special work permit that can be issued for up to two years, providing them with work authorization while their PR application is being processed.
