Essen Spearheads Hydrogen Economy Expansion, Hosts Energy Law Day
Essen, the energy capital of Europe, is advancing its hydrogen economy. Mayor Thomas Kufen recently hosted prominent figures from business, justice, and law at the Philharmonic Hall to discuss this shift. The city has allocated 1.45 million euros to support sustainable projects through its Climate and Innovation Fund.
At the core of Essen's hydrogen strategy are two key bodies: the H2 Advisory Board and the H2 Utility Board (H2UB). The H2 Advisory Board, composed of experts from industry, science, and politics, guides the implementation of hydrogen strategies. Meanwhile, the H2UB, consisting of representatives from local utilities and energy companies, coordinates hydrogen infrastructure and usage initiatives.
Essen's dedication to sustainability was also showcased in its hosting of the 24th German Energy Law Day on September 4th, 2025. The event, organized by the Essen law firm Rosin Büdenbender, focused on current developments in energy law and the future of the energy industry. This year's theme, 'Adjusting the Energy Transition', emphasized the need to reassess initial plans to balance costs, benefits, and prosperity alongside climate neutrality.
Essen continues to lead the way in Europe's energy landscape, prioritizing the expansion of the hydrogen economy and fostering dialogue around the energy transition. With its Climate and Innovation Fund and dedicated hubs for new hydrogen technologies, the city is well-positioned to drive sustainable progress while ensuring a balanced approach to energy policy.
