EU and U.S. facilitate speedy trade negotiations following telephone conversation
The European Commission and the White House have announced a fast-tracked negotiation schedule for bilateral trade, following a productive phone conversation between President Ursula von der Leyen and President Donald Trump.
Originated from a phone call, this step forward in trade discussions was spurred by President Trump's threats to impose a 50% tariff on European imports as early as June 1. These threats have now been paused until July 9, allowing enough time for negotiations to progress.
Commission spokesperson, Paula Pinho, reported that the European Union is now eager to push negotiations forward, focusing on the world's most significant and closest trade relationship. The Commission stated that they possess a designated negotiating team, led by trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, ready to engage with the US commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, in phone talks this afternoon.
Prior to Trump's threatened tariffs, diplomatic efforts between the US and the EU had aimed to avoid an escalating trade war. The two parties agreed to suspend retaliatory tariffs until July to engineer a more favorable agreement. However, Trump's recent threats significantly raised the stakes, with the US leader expressing reluctance to reach a deal with the EU, reiterating his view that the EU was created to undermine the United States.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin welcomed this latest development in EU-US trade relations, emphasizing the need for a realistic and reasonable deal that benefits both parties. Likewise, Germany's Finance Minister, Lars Klingbeil, called for serious negotiations with the US, warning of the potential economic harm tariffs could inflict on all parties involved.
While there are evident distance in viewpoints between the two entities, the European Commission spokesperson for Economic Security and Trade, Olof Gill, expressed optimism that meaningful progress can be made if Trump's recent remarks serve as a catalyst for substantial conversations.
