EU designated €422 million toward enhancing the infrastructure for alternative fuels
The European Commission has announced the selection of 39 projects for funding of nearly €422 million under the 2024-2025 Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). This initiative, with a total budget of €1 billion, aims to advance decarbonisation efforts and support the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure along the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).
One of the notable recipients of funding is Milence, a joint venture of Daimler Truck, Traton, and Volvo Group. They will receive €111 million to establish 64 truck charging parks across multiple EU countries. The projects will also include the establishment of two ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities.
Hydrogen refueling stations are also a focus of the AFIF funding. HVR Energy will establish 20 hydrogen stations across Spain with EU support of €4.2 million. Air Products will receive €6.3 million to build two large-scale hydrogen refueling stations in Germany. The named companies that each received over one million euros from the AFIF initiative for establishing hydrogen refueling stations in various European countries include Air Liquide, H2 Mobility Deutschland, and HyGear.
The funding is part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and will also support the electrification of ground handling services at eight airports and the decarbonisation of nine ports. Brussels Airport will receive €7.2 million in funding to electrify ground handling services, installing 328 charging points for support vehicles and other electrical infrastructure.
E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDIR) has secured €45 million to deploy more than 1,000 recharging points across six European nations. The selected projects will facilitate the installation of approximately 2,500 electric recharging points for light-duty vehicles and 2,400 for heavy-duty vehicles.
The next deadline for AFIF applications is 11 June 2025. Following approval from EU Member States on 4 February 2025, the European Commission will adopt the award decisions and finalize grant agreements with successful applicants in the coming months.
The fourth annual CiTTi Awards will be held on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London to celebrate achievements and innovations in alternative fuels. This event promises to be a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to promote sustainable transport solutions across Europe.
