EU to Negotiate TEN-T Regulation Revision Amid Driver Shortage

Tomorrow, EU legislators will negotiate the revision of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Regulation. This is crucial for the road transport sector, which is struggling with a driver shortage of 500,000 and needs improvements in working conditions, including secure parking areas.

The revision aims to ensure the smooth functioning of the internal market and interoperability of transport modes across the network. It will be discussed by members of the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Council of the European Union. However, Member States' reluctance may hinder improvements in drivers' working conditions.

The Parliament and Council have differing views on the creation of safe and secure truck parking areas (SSTPAs). The International Road Transport Union (IRU), along with the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) and the European Shippers' Council (ESC), urge reasonable deadlines for establishing these areas. IRU EU Advocacy Director Raluca Marian supports the Parliament's position, which prioritizes drivers' needs. An agreement between EU legislators is necessary to address these issues.

The revision of the TEN-T Regulation is linked to the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). With a shortage of 500,000 professional drivers, improving working conditions is vital to retain and attract more drivers. The outcome of tomorrow's negotiations will significantly impact the road transport sector's future.
