EU's Environmental Policy and Regulations
In a recent visit to the International Automobile Exhibition IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, the Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour, and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg, expressed optimism about the innovation capability and momentum of Baden-Württemberg exhibitors.
Hoffmeister-Kraut, who is also the Minister of Baden-Württemberg, praised the new products, particularly in the electric and hybrid areas and the integration of future technologies, showcased by German automobile manufacturers and suppliers at the IAA. Companies and entrepreneurs from Baden-Württemberg stood out at the event by showcasing strengths in software, system integration, machinery, and plant engineering, along with a strong supplier base. Key innovations focused on new electric platforms from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen, as well as advancements in battery technology and recycling.
This visit to the IAA has further solidified Hoffmeister-Kraut's belief that the technology from the home of the automobile is top-notch. She believes that the industry in Baden-Württemberg is well-positioned to lead the automotive transformation.
However, Hoffmeister-Kraut is urging the EU to prioritize practical, concrete measures over regulation in the automotive industry. She is calling for the EU to reconsider its blanket ban on internal combustion engines by 2035 and is advocating for more flexibility with fleet limits.
She suggests a review of existing regulations and greater consideration of transitional technologies such as plug-in hybrid vehicles and range extenders. This approach, she argues, would allow for a smoother transition to electric vehicles while still ensuring that the industry remains competitive.
Citizens who wish to voice their opinions or seek more information about the Minister's stance can do so through the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour, and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg's contact form or by contacting the press office via email.
On September 12, 2025, the Strategic Dialog of the European Automobile Industry will take place, providing an opportunity for discussions on these and other important issues in the industry.
