Get ready for a major shift along the Missouri Riverfront as the KC Current, Palmer Square Real Estate Management, and Marquee Development are set to kick off the groundbreaking mixed-use district project. This multi-phase, privately-funded development aims to rejuvenate the waterfront and bring the energetic ambiance of downtown Kansas City right to its banks.

With a whopping $1 billion investment, this development follows closely on the heels of the Kansas City Current's commitment to the community, a year after the world's first stadium built specifically for a professional women's team, the CPKC Stadium, opened its doors in 2024 [1]. Construction crews have been hard at work since December 2024, preparing sites for the initial vertical buildout of phase one.

Phase one, an impressive $200 million phase, includes the construction of 429 multifamily units, 48,000 square feet of retail space, and more than two acres of public land, including a stylish new town square and a picturesque riverfront promenade. These features will be developed and unveiled over time, with an expected completion date of 2026 [1].

Jon Stephens, President of Port KC, emphasized the project's significance in revitalizing the riverfront: "Kansas City has always been a city built on the river, and our vision has always been to restore that connection by creating a alive, walkable community. We've built trails, residential, and public spaces – now, with the Current, this district will awaken the Berkley Riverfront in a way previously unimaginable" [1].

Based near the CPKC Stadium, Berkley Riverfront Park, and the Missouri River, the development is anticipated to make the region a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike. Local culinary talents are expected to take center stage, further bolstering Kansas City's already enviable reputation for delicious dining experiences [1].

Palmer Square Real Estate Management and Marquee Development are serving as co-developers for the development, with VCC Construction handling the general contracting and Klover Architects serving as the Architect of Record. Perkins Eastman is the Design Architect [2].

What's the Buzz Now?

On June 3, 2025, the KC Current announced plans for a new waterfront park called Levee Park on the Berkley Riverfront. The proposed park aims to bring Kansas City residents closer to the Missouri River and includes trails, overlooks, cafe spaces, play areas, performance areas, and native landscaping. Developers are planning for the park to replace the presently neglected "riprap and weeds" into a public community asset. The move comes on the heels of recent groundbreaking on apartment buildings in the area, which ignited enormous interest since the Current's CPKC Stadium opened its doors in 2024 [1].

Furthermore, the park will be built at no cost to the city, with Kansas City granting developers the free use of the land in return for the team constructing, operating, and maintaining the park without any financial burden on local taxpayers [1]. Following a unanimous approval by the City Council finance committee, negotiations for final approval from the full City Council are currently underway [2]. The committee has also proposed the creation of an independent entertainment district zoning, which will allow for alcohol sales via movable bars within the riverfront zone [2]. Developers hope to complete Levee Park during the summer of 2026, ahead of the FIFA World Cup, a move that will likely transform an overlooked riverfront into a lively gathering place for residents and families [1].
