Expansion of The Northern Studios granted by local council greenlight
In a significant move for the town of Hartlepool, the Northern Studios has received approval for a £33.5 million expansion, funded by the UK government and local authorities. This ambitious project, set to deliver a lasting boost to the local economy, will position Hartlepool as a serious player in the UK's creative sector.
The development will encompass a Screen Industries Production Village, featuring nine repurposed buildings that will serve as pre and post-production spaces, workshops, and creative hubs. One of the heritage properties to be utilised is the Grade-II listed Shades Hotel, which will be restored to contribute to the project.
The expansion will also include the construction of larger studios and the installation of new facilities, creating over 130 new jobs. This development is expected to attract further private sector investment, fostering a thriving ecosystem for local talent and businesses.
Hartlepool Borough Council has approved the transformative project, which aims to nurture local talent in the creative industries. The project will be instrumental in increasing TV and film production across Hartlepool and the wider Tees Valley, supporting the growth of the North East's screen sector.
The initiative is being led by Hartlepool Borough Council, The Northern School of Art, Tees Valley Combined Authority, and North East Screen. The UK Government and Tees Valley Investment Zone have provided funding for the project, with investments from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as well.
This development is more than just a boost for the local economy; it's an opportunity for Hartlepool to shine on the national stage. By fostering a thriving ecosystem for local talent and businesses, the expansion of Northern Studios will continue to support small business ideas in the screen sector, ensuring a lasting impact on the creative industries in Hartlepool.
