Extension of Clay Wade Bailey Bridge closure by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet till July 3.
The much-anticipated repair project on the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge (U.S. 25/42/127) in Kenton County, Kentucky, has been completed, as confirmed by the latest updates from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). The bridge initially closed for repairs on April 22, 2024, and was originally scheduled to reopen on July 1, 2025.
However, the reopening was delayed due to the discovery of additional unplanned repairs on modular joints and steel, as well as other issues to ensure long-term functionality. As a result, the bridge reopened with one lane open in each direction by July 3, 2025, while some minor finishing repair work continued with lane closures.
The repair project, which includes replacing joints, sealing joints, repairing steel, and approach/truss drainage repairs, was awarded to M&M Services Co. Inc. for a total cost of $2.8 million. The company was also tasked with additional repairs to modular joints and other steel repairs to ensure the bridge remains in good working order for years to come.
The bridge closure limits extend from the intersection of KY 8 - W. 4th Street to the Kentucky/Ohio state line, covering approximately 0.42 miles. A signed detour is in place using the Brent Spence Bridge and the Taylor Southgate Bridge, and motorists should expect delays and heavier traffic on surrounding bridges.
Despite the delay, the project has now concluded its major repair phase as of July 2025. The Interstate 471 Daniel Carter Beard Bridge fire caused a temporary setback, but the contractors returned to the project on Tuesday, May 27, to begin final repairs. Pedestrian access was maintained throughout the bridge closure.
The KYTC District 6 report for the week of July 27, 2025, marks the routine maintenance project on the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge as complete. The bridge, a vital link between Kenton County and the surrounding areas, is now ready to serve the community once again.
