Fashion Doll Icon Barbie Expands Design Partnerships with Inclusion of Gap Brand
The Gap has announced a new collaboration with Mattel, the toy company behind iconic brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels. The Gap x Barbie and Hot Wheels collections will be available starting May 23 on gap.com and in select Gap stores globally.
This move aligns with Gap's broader brand reinvigoration led by a former Mattel executive, Richard Dickson, who previously orchestrated Barbie’s comeback at Mattel. Since taking the helm at Gap, Dickson has implemented a "product-first" strategy, reintroducing nostalgic elements combined with fresh, modern designs, and collaborations with notable creatives. This strategic refocus has helped Gap’s sales improve, indicating a broader positive impact on the brand image and commercial performance.
The items in the Gap x Barbie collection will feature Barbie branding and Gap's signature arch typeface. Mattel will also sell some styles via Mattel Creations, its collector and direct-to-consumer platform. Later this year, Mattel and Gap will unveil a collection based on Mattel’s Hot Wheels toys.
While direct references to the specific Gap x Barbie and Hot Wheels collections' sales impact are sparse, Mattel continues to strengthen its brand through multiple partnerships and product innovation. Mattel's ongoing innovation and strategic launches sustain its iconic brands’ consumer appeal, indirectly supporting Gap’s revitalization where these collaborations are concerned.
The first release of the collaboration, the Gap x Barbie collection, will include tees, skirts, logo hoodies, denim, button-downs, accessories, and pet apparel. Gap's chief merchant, Christopher Goble, is excited about the partnership, expressing his anticipation for the collection.
In addition to the Gap x Barbie and Hot Wheels collections, Mattel has also added Forever 21 and Balmain to its portfolio of collaborations. The intensifying anticipation around the upcoming Barbie movie is also stoking the hype around all things Barbie.
However, it's worth noting that Gap's partnership with Kanye West, known as Ye, imploded in 2021 due to Ye's controversial remarks. Adidas also stopped selling items from its collaboration with Ye. Gap stopped selling items from the Yeezy Gap collaboration due to Ye's racist and antisemitic remarks and social media posts.
As of now, no recent information indicates any discontinuation or issues with the Gap x Barbie and Hot Wheels collections, and they appear to be an integral part of Gap’s efforts to regain market presence. Gap Inc. has not yet named a new chief executive.
