Federal Conservatives in Saarland advocate for complete transfer of national infrastructure program to municipalities
The Saarland municipalities are bearing the brunt of maintaining public infrastructure, and a call for immediate action has been echoed by local officials. Roland Theis, a CDU federal MP, is urging the state government to efficiently pass on funds from the federal infrastructure package without unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.
The proposed approach is modelled on the 2009 economic stimulus package, where simplified procedures and direct awards were allowed, leading to less paperwork and more visible results in municipalities. The goal is to ensure that the Saarland's municipalities, which are among the financially weakest in Germany, receive the necessary funds for infrastructure projects such as schools, kindergartens, municipal roads and bridges, fire station buildings, town halls, swimming pools, and sports halls.
Mayor Marcus Hoffeld is advocating for 100% of the infrastructure package funds to be allocated to municipal infrastructure. This demand has been made in a joint statement by Stephan Toscani, chairman of the CDU state parliamentary fraction, Marcus Hoffeld, spokesman for the CDU mayors, and Roland Theis, CDU federal MP.
The Saarland CDU is demanding that the state government pays out the funds to municipalities, cities, and districts without cuts or additional hurdles. This is crucial to ensure that the municipalities in the Saarland do not get left behind in the broader federal infrastructure planning.
However, as of now, there is no detailed public information specifying which cities, city associations, or districts in Saxony have supported projects under the planned Federal Infrastructure Package that should directly receive funding from the state of Saxony and be distributed at the municipal level. Leipzig has placed a moratorium on new investment projects planned from 2025 without financial commitments yet, except for specific exceptions like school expansions, bridge safety, and certain pilot projects.
Roland Theis wants the citizens to see tangible improvements in their local areas due to the infrastructure package. He is suggesting aligning the procedures with the economic stimulus package of 2009, where simplified procedures and direct awards were allowed, to ensure swift implementation of the infrastructure package.
The infrastructure needs in municipalities are significant, and it is crucial that they are addressed efficiently and effectively to ensure the continued growth and development of these communities. The Saarland CDU's call for direct funding to municipalities, cities, and districts is a step towards achieving this goal.
