In Germany, ensuring the safety and roadworthiness of your vehicle is a priority, and the MOT (Fahrzeug-Hauptuntersuchung) plays a crucial role in maintaining this safety. Here's what you need to know about the costs, consequences, and organisations involved in the MOT process.

The standard MOT costs €120, but if you miss the inspection date by more than two months, an 'additional inspection' is required. This extra check costs €24, which is 20% more than the normal MOT. It's important to note that the new MOT sticker is not backdated, even if you're three months late. The sticker will still be valid for two years from the actual inspection date.

Commercial vehicles are subject to stricter regulations. If a safety inspection is delayed by four months, a point is added to the vehicle's record. Delays of four to eight months result in a €25 fine, while a delay of more than eight months can lead to higher penalties from both the police and MOT organisations like TÜV, DEKRA, GTÜ, or KÜS. In such cases, the traffic safety is significantly compromised, and the regular technical oversight is no longer guaranteed.

Minor delays might be overlooked by the police, but a delay of more than two months can result in a €15 fine. In the city of Flensburg, a delay of more than eight months can lead to a more substantial fine and an additional point.

It's worth noting that car insurance companies may cover the costs of overdue MOTs, but they can make recourse claims if known defects are present. This means that if your vehicle fails the MOT and has existing issues that could have been addressed earlier, the insurance company may seek reimbursement for the costs incurred.

In summary, it's essential to keep up with your MOT appointments to avoid fines, additional costs, and potential insurance issues. By doing so, you're ensuring the safety of yourself, other road users, and maintaining the roadworthiness of your vehicle.
