Leon Kiptum Kidombo, a renowned figure in Kenya's fintech industry, passed away on August 3, 2025, at the age of 44. Kiptum's career spanned over two decades, during which he held significant roles in both traditional banking and fintech, leaving an indelible mark on the East African fintech landscape.

Kiptum's professional journey began in banking, where he climbed the ranks at major Kenyan banks, including Barclays (Absa), KCB Group, Credit Bank, and Family Bank. He later led digital banking at Sidian before making a transition into fintech.

In 2021, Kiptum joined Chipper Cash and later took on the role of Senior Vice-President East Africa at Flutterwave. At Flutterwave, he provided steady and trustworthy leadership, demonstrating strong commercial skills and regulatory knowledge. His tenure at the company was marked by his efforts to stabilize and grow its business in Kenya, as well as his mentorship of numerous fintech professionals.

Kiptum's influence extended beyond Flutterwave, playing a crucial but understated role in shaping Kenya's fintech landscape. He fostered industry collaboration and regional expansion, helping to make the sector more mature and unified.
