FRV Battles Ongoing IT Outage After Cyber-Attack, Employee Data Stolen
Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) is battling an ongoing IT outage following a cyber-attack on December 15, 2022. Despite this, emergency response services remain unaffected. The ransomware group ALPHV, also known as BlackCat, has claimed responsibility and stolen personnel data.
The cyber-attack has resulted in the theft of personally identifiable information of current, former, and prospective employees, as well as job applicants. This includes data from both FRV and the former Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board. The Vice Society ransomware group, known for targeting beyond healthcare and education, is behind the attack. They employ a custom payload called PolyVice and the double extortion technique.
FRV is still managing day-to-day activities using offline resources. They have informed the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) about the breach and will contact those affected. Individuals are advised to stay vigilant online and follow cybersecurity tips.
FRV continues to work on resolving the IT outage caused by the cyber-attack. Those potentially affected should expect contact from FRV for support and guidance. The ransomware group ALPHV, operating as Vice Society, has demonstrated its expanding reach and sophisticated tactics.
