Germany's prominent castle faces a dire shortage of funds.
Schloss Friedenstein, a historic building that has stood tall in Gotha for almost 400 years, is set to undergo its first comprehensive renovation since its construction. The renovation project, which is estimated to cost a large three-digit million sum, will receive a significant boost with a 100 million euro investment from a special programme by the federal and state governments.
The Stiftung Thueringer Schloessern und Gaerten, the organisation responsible for the maintenance and restoration of numerous historical properties in Thuringia, will benefit from this investment. The programme, aimed at 13 of the foundation's 35 properties, will provide Schloss Friedenstein with a substantial 50 million euros.
The initial focus of the renovation work will be on the two side wings of the castle complex. The West Tower, North Wing, and the park including the orangery are also included in the renovation plan. However, due to the size and complex damage patterns, not the entire castle can be renovated, as stated by the director of Friedenstein, Doris Fischer.
According to Fischer, the estimated cost for the renovation of Schloss Friedenstein ranges between 300 to 500 million euros. Despite extensive research, no specific figure or estimate for the additional cost beyond the current 110 million euros can be given at this time.
Upon completion of the major project in 2032, a follow-up project will be necessary to ensure the continued preservation of this historic gem. For precise and updated details on the additional renovation costs, it is recommended to consult the original article by Simone Rothe on the Funke Medien Thueringen website or official project communications related to Schloss Friedenstein.
The Stiftung Thueringer Schloessern und Gaerten, responsible for the preservation of Thuringian historical properties, will receive a substantial contribution from the government program for the renovation of Schloss Friedenstein, amounting to 50 million euros. The comprehensive renovation of Schloss Friedenstein, with initial costs estimated between 300 to 500 million euros, will significantly impact various businesses in the industry and finance sectors, considering the size and complexity of the project.
