Empowering Rural Communities: Schleswig-Holstein's Investment in Village Development

Administration advances rural development initiatives - Government endorses initiatives aimed at agricultural growth and infrastructure improvement in countryside areas.

ynomous euros are allocated for improving the rural landscapes of Schleswig-Holstein. The state government, under the guidance of Minister Werner Schwarz (CDU), is backing initiatives that elevate the local lifestyle and infrastructure utilizing these funds, with 8.5 million euros coming from EU resources and an additional 1.2 million euros from the joint federal-state task of enhancing agricultural structure and coastal protection.

The funds are primarily earmarked for village development projects or multi-purpose buildings, as well as for revamping rural roadways, according to ministry statements. These multi-purpose buildings not only serve as spaces for local commerce and education but also foster community gatherings, said Schwarz. "They serve as community meeting spots where locals can network and collaborate."

The cabinet has greenlit funding for projects totaling over half a million euros. The Market Treff Freienwill in the Kreis Schleswig-Flensburg (total costs: 4.16 million euros), the multi-purpose building "Our Village Center" in Alveslohe in the Kreis Segeberg (4.96 million euros), and the Education Campus Kremperheide in the Kreis Steinburg (4.59 million euros) will each receive around 1.5 million euros in funding.

Furthermore, the state government supports municipalities in their endeavors to expand the rural road network. "Well-developed, connected roads are crucial not only for agriculture, but also for tourism and nearby recreation," said Schwarz. Projects in the city of Fehmarn are among those receiving support from the state.

Schleswig-Holstein leverages a harmonious blend of EU funds, notably the EU’s Rural Development pillar, the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), and Interreg, along with state government resources, to fund rural development. The primary focus revolves around village development, multi-purpose buildings, and infrastructure improvements like modernizing rural roadways.

The EU Rural Development pillar, supported by the EAFRD, supplies substantial funds for projects that boost the social, environmental, and economic sustainability of rural areas. This encompasses measures such as infrastructure enhancements, village renovation, and community facility development.

In combination with national funds, these resources help implement integrated rural strategies, including investments in multi-purpose community buildings, upgrading rural roadways, and revitalizing public spaces to enhance quality of life and economic opportunities.

Schleswig-Holstein prioritizes village development by offering co-financing for projects like multi-purpose buildings that serve as community centers, digital hubs, and meeting places, boosting social cohesion and local engagement. Modernizing rural roads is another key concern, with funds often pooled alongside EU-subsidized projects to ensure improved connectivity, support local businesses, and enhance access to essential services.

Schleswig-Holstein encourages collaboration between municipalities, businesses, and stakeholders to maximize the impact of EU and state funding. Initiatives like those led by the Schleswig-Holstein Institute for Vocational Education and Training (SHIBB) tackle broader rural challenges, focusing on mobility and skills development, essential for thriving villages.
