Hot Off The Press: Metropolitan Tram-Train Network Coming to Oradea!

Hey there bud! Last week, the Bihor County Council gave the nod to the technical and economic indicators for the development of the Oradea metropolitan tram-train network. This badass project will serve as a shiny new alternative for locals hopping around the metropolitan area.

So, what's the plan here, you ask? They're gonna modernize some old railway lines to create a sleek metropolitan train network. This network will hook up Oradea multiple ways, give or take 33.4 km. The lines will point towards Oradea Airport, Sânmartin - Băile 1 Mai - Băile Felix (Cordău), Borș (Industrial Park), Sântandrei - Girișu de Criș - Toboliu - Cheresig, and more.

This mega project is expected to cost a stack of 274 million Euros, making it the most impressive, valuable, and crucial tram-train project in all of Romania, according to the head honcho of Bihor County Council, Mircea Mălan. The deal also includes the nabbing of 14 fresh tram-train vehicles.

Local honchos state that the network project has become an absolute necessity due to the population surge in Oradea and its metropolitan region, along with the increasing number of mega-jobs in town. With half of these commuters cruising around in their own rides, this project offers an environmentally-friendly and efficient transport alternative.

Nearly three-quarters of the total network length, about 24.2 km, will consist of reconditioned and electrified railway lines. The project entails the creation of 27 stations, five bridges, three underground pedestrian crossings, nine pedestrian overpasses, and 39 level crossings.

The Bihor County Council tossed documentation for European funding in December 2024. As we speak, this application is under review. In the not-so-distant future, they'll launch a tender for the design and execution of the project.

Last year, Ilie Bolojan, then-president of the Bihor County Council, spilled the beans about the metropolitan tram-train network development. This marks one of the essential mobility projects surrounding the city of Oradea.
