Ground Source Heating initiative by Kensa and Together Housing makes it to the shortlist of the esteemed H&V News Award
In a significant stride towards decarbonization and reducing fuel poverty, a partnership between Kensa Contracting and Together Housing has initiated a multi-site renewable heating upgrade program. This ambitious project aims to install 1,000 ground source heat pumps across 12 locations in Lancashire, South, and West Yorkshire.
The project, which involves installing these heat pumps in various types of social housing residences, including maisonettes, houses, and flats, is expected to save tenants an average of 45% in heating costs. Each heat pump is connected to shared ground loop arrays, where two or more properties share a borehole, making the system both efficient and cost-effective.
This innovative project is not only reducing the UK's greenhouse gas emissions, as 14% of these come from households, but also utilises British-manufactured renewable technology. The heat pumps are a key component in the nation's transition towards a more sustainable energy future, with the carbon impact further reduced as the grid decarbonizes with increased levels of renewable capacity.
The project's lifetime carbon savings are calculated to be upwards of 44,858tCO, a substantial contribution towards the UK's carbon reduction targets. The shared ground loop array method also allows residents independent heating control and the freedom to switch energy suppliers.
Kensa Contracting and Together Housing have been recognised for their efforts, being shortlisted for the H&V News 'Renewable Project of the Year' Award. The organisations are in esteemed company, with Peabody, Stadium Housing Association, and Waltham Forest Council also nominated in the social housing category.
Patrick Berry, Managing Director of Together Energy, expressed his satisfaction with the project's recognition for its positive impact on residents' lives and the environment. David Broom, Commercial Director of Kensa Contracting, stated that the project is the largest of its kind, using ground source heat pumps in social housing.
The annual H&V News Awards ceremony, where the winners will be announced on the 30th April 2020, is an annual celebration of excellence in the HVAC and building services industry. This project is a testament to the industry's ability to innovate and make a real difference in people's lives.
