Indian-Born Powerhouse: Royal Enfield overshadows Harley, BMW, and KTM in Middle-Class Motorcycles

Harley, BMW, and KTM face challenges against the growing dominance of Royal Enfield in the motorcycling market.

Think Japan or China when it comes to major motorcycle manufacturers? Well, you're missing out on India, which takes the crown, rightfully so. But it's not about revenue or sheer quantity of production, it's about the middle-class motorcycles, and Royal Enfield knocks it out of the park.

While giants like Harley-Davidson and BMW hold the top spots in high-end motorcycle sales, and Japanese brands like Honda and Yamaha lead in annual productions due to their broad model range, Royal Enfield stands alone when we focus on middle-class motorbikes, specifically those with engine capacities ranging from 250cc to 750cc.

Kai Petermann, responsible for Royal Enfield's distribution in Germany, points out their unique selling point, "We don't tinker with 125cc or smaller engines or mopeds, light motorcycles, or anything similar. We focus solely on the middle-class motorcycles." And this focus paid off big time. In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, Royal Enfield hit an impressive milestone with its annual motorcycle sales, surpassing one million units for the first time ever.

Royal Enfield's portfolio consists of four engine series, with a 350cc single-cylinder engine, two air-cooled engines - a 440cc single-cylinder not homologated for Europe and a 650cc twin-cylinder, and a newer 450cc single-cylinder engine, which debuted in 2023 and is available in the Himalayan and Guerilla adventurer and naked bikes.

An Indian brand, Royal Enfield is a growing sensation, especially within its home market, considered a premium brand. Its popularity is on the rise not just in Asia but also in the western world, including Germany, where it made it to the list of the twelve strongest-selling motorcycle brands by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) in 2023.

Looking forward, Royal Enfield is setting its sights on the twin-cylinder segment, with plans to introduce the "Bear 650" and "Classic 650" models in 2025. The "Bear 650" will be a scrambler, while the "Classic 650" will continue the brand's legacy that has been running since 1901 in its model name. With these new additions, their lineup now boasts twelve models in various forms and colors, starting at €4,490 for the most affordable HNTR 350, Dapper version, and going up to €8,390 for the top-tier Super Meteor 650 "Celestial."

To strengthen its presence in Germany, Royal Enfield is expanding its subsidiary operations, aiming to offer better service to customers. "We want to cater to our customers with improved service, and for that purpose, we're establishing our own German subsidiary," explains Petermann. This new subsidiary is set to launch in the Freiburg area in autumn, handling distribution in Germany.

In conclusion, Royal Enfield has shown impressive growth and dominance in the middle-class motorcycle segment, leaving Harley-Davidson, BMW, and KTM trailing behind. Although there is no official global ranking declaring Royal Enfield the largest in terms of production or sales in the 250cc–750cc segment worldwide, with over a million units produced annually, it's clear they lead the charge in this niche market, especially in India and key export regions.
