Health Insurance Calculators Raise Transparency Concerns in Switzerland

Switzerland's health insurance premium calculators, popular tools for consumers, have raised concerns about transparency and independence. While some platforms like Swupp.ch strive for impartiality, others, such as Comparis, generate substantial revenue from commissions, potentially influencing results.

Comparis, the largest portal, earns six to ten million francs annually from its calculator, receiving 70 francs per successful offer. It displays offers from insurers paying for prominent placement, marked as 'advertisement'. However, the background of labels like 'winner' remains unclear to users.

Visana's premium calculator, operated via a subsidiary, was taken offline due to lack of transparency. Some portals lack complete, up-to-date imprint information, making it hard for users to assess their reliability. Most calculators have commercial interests, with only a few, like Swupp.ch and Consumer Protection, offering independent, transparent recommendations and tools for switching insurance.

The popularity of health insurance premium calculators during new premium releases highlights the need for transparency and independence. While some platforms like Swupp.ch offer unbiased tools, many others have commercial interests that may influence results. Users should be cautious and verify the reliability of these platforms.
