Heavy Vehicles over 7.5 Tonnes to Face New Radar Control on Josef-Kardinal-Frings Bridge in Dusseldorf
The city of Düsseldorf has introduced a new silhouette speed camera on the Josef Cardinal Frings Bridge, marking a significant development in traffic management in the region. This camera system, unique in its ability to perform weight control in addition to measuring speed, was installed on June 30.
The new camera measures vehicles in both directions of travel, aiming to ensure compliance with the permissible maximum speed for all motor vehicles, as well as a reduced vehicle weight limit of 7.5 tons due to specific bearing damage and the poor overall condition of the bridge.
Companies in the affected area, including those in the industries of economics and logistics, were informed about the changes in advance. Any exceptions to the weight limit will be checked before fines are issued, with the fine for a first offense set at 128.50 euros, including fees. For repeat offenses, the fine increases to 228.50 euros, reflecting the assumption of intent.
The Josef Cardinal Frings Bridge has been under partial renovation since August 2024. Renewal of parts of the road surfaces, sealings, drainage facilities, and repair of concrete road plates and protective facilities have been part of the renovation. Traffic management was mirrored to continue similar work on the roadway in the direction of Neuss since the end of April 2025.
During the renovation, around 50,000 vehicles daily were rerouted via the Rhine Railway tracks to the northern half of the bridge in the direction of Düsseldorf. The detour for vehicles traveling to the north leads through Düsseldorf via the Rhine knee bridge, while the detour for vehicles traveling in the southern direction is via the A57 / A46 (Fleher Bridge).
