Top-tier horse racing stables, Coolmore and Amo Racing, are locked in fierce competition; a Wootton Bassett colt, aged to perfection, fetches an impressive €2.3 million price tag at Deauville auction.

Arqana August Yearling Sale Breaks Records with Strong Turnout

The Arqana August Yearling Sale 2022 concluded with impressive results, as the clearance rate reached an impressive 85%, aggregate sales hit €15,035,000, and both the average price and median price saw significant increases. The average price rose by a full 25% to €246,475, while the median price climbed 19 points, rising from €147,500 to €175,000.

The highlight of the sale was the bidding for a Frankel colt, sired by Mangoustine, a Group 1 winner. The bidding started with a three-way struggle between Amo, Coolmore, and an online participant. Eventually, Yoshito Yahagi secured the colt for €500,000.

Mangoustine, the colt's dam, is a distinguished horse herself, having won the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. She was purchased by Imad Alsagar's outfit for €75,000 in 2019. The bidding for the Frankel colt reached a climax at €2,300,000, with Coolmore emerging as the victorious bidder.

The Frankel colt's breeding is impressive, as he is from the third Coolmore-conceived crop of Wootton Bassett, meaning he was bred at a fee of €150,000. Mangoustine also has a filly foal by Siyouni.

The colt was bred by a partnership including Ecurie des Monceaux, Lordship Stud, and Qatar Bloodstock. Mangoustine's dam, Zotilla, is a Zamindar half-sister to seven winners, most notably Flotilla. Mangoustine was bought for €46,000 at the Covid-impacted Deauville yearling sale in 2020.

Other notable sales included a Wootton Bassett filly purchased by Godolphin for €400,000, bred in partnership by Haras du Cadran, Ballylinch Stud, Ecurie Melanie, and Cheval Invest II. Godolphin also participated in the sale, going to €900,000 for a colt out of Hidden Breeze, a sibling to the black type winners Labeling, Lily's Angel, and Zurigha.

The Arqana August Yearling Sale 2022 saw a total of €50,000,000 raised for 226 yearlings sold. The top-selling horses included a lot numbered 474, bought by Ghislaine Bozo and Emeric Guetin for a top price of €110,000. Notable consignments included yearlings from Sheikh Fahad, featuring a New Bay filly out of the G3 Derrinstown Stud Fillies Stakes winner Know It All and a Siyouni colt out of Lightening Pearl, a Cheveley Park Stakes winner.

Leading sires represented included Bayside Boy, Blackbeard, Naval Crown, State Of Rest, and Thunder Moon, who had their first yearlings offered at the sale. Despite the impressive figures, the top price did not reach the six-figure or million-euro levels seen in some other sales.

The Arqana August Yearling Sale 2022 demonstrated a strong turnout, with several high-quality yearlings from prominent bloodlines sold. The sale provided a platform for breeders and buyers to invest in the future of horse racing, ensuring the continuation of the sport's rich tradition and competitive spirit.
