The Chinese automotive landscape is set to welcome a new player, as Luxeed, a joint venture between Huawei and Chery, unveiled its first MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) model on April 28, 2024, at the Beijing auto show. However, plans for mass production and delivery, initially scheduled for this year, have since been discontinued.

Luxeed's MPV boasts advanced powertrain and battery technologies, offering a range of configurations focusing on range and performance. The range-extended (EREV) versions feature a 1.5T range extender producing 156 horsepower, while the ultra trims offer dual motors with a combined output of up to 520 horsepower. Max and Pro versions have a single motor rated around 320 horsepower.

The powertrain benefits from Huawei’s high-voltage electric drive platform, featuring a 3-in-1 electric drive system with 92% efficiency and 4C supercharging capability, capable of adding 400 km range in just 10 minutes.

Batteries for the Luxeed MPV will be supplied by CATL, utilizing Huawei’s Giant Whale Battery technology. EREV models come with 37 kWh and 53 kWh battery packs, enabling combined ranges over 1,600 km (battery plus fuel). Pure battery electric versions come with 82 kWh to 100 kWh packs, offering a pure electric range exceeding 700 km under CLTC conditions.

The vehicle measures about 5,080 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width, 1,780 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm. Seating options include five and six-seat layouts, emphasizing space and flexibility.

Additional features include an intelligent chassis with CDC (Continuous Damping Control) suspension and adaptive driving modes. Advanced driver assistance is provided via Huawei’s ADS 2.0 (and 3.0 in some models), integrating LIDAR, BEV cameras, and AI for mapless intelligent driving.

The cabin tech is powered by HarmonyOS 4.0 Cockpit, supporting multi-sensory and multi-device interconnection. Interior amenities include a cooling and heating refrigerator, premium audio system with 21 speakers, and microphones on side mirrors.

If the EHV, as the Luxeed MPV is internally known, can be launched as scheduled in the first half of next year, it could become the first MPV under the HIMA business. The HIMA business, established by Huawei, also includes four other brands: Stelato under BAIC Group, Aito under Seres Group, Shangjie under SAIC Motor, and Maextro under Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group.

The Luxeed MPV was initially planned to replace a previously planned project by Chery, the Exeed Sterra E08, which has been discontinued. However, the Luxeed MPV's production has since been halted, and the focus has shifted to the S7 and R7 models, with pre-sales for updated versions of these models set to begin on August 8. The official launch of the updated S7 and R7 models is expected in September.
