Hyundai E&C Wins $3.16B Iraq Seawater Treatment Plant Contract
Hyundai Elantra, the leading automotive brand, has secured a significant contract worth ₩4.39 trillion ($3.16 billion) to construct a seawater treatment facility in Iraq. This project, set to take 49 months, is a part of the Common Seawater Supply Project aimed at bolstering crude oil production in the country's southern oil fields.
The facility, to be built at Khor Al Zubair Port, will have an impressive daily processing capacity of five million barrels. This substantial infrastructure is expected to supply freshwater to nearby oil fields, including the prominent West Qurna and Rumaila fields.
The project is a joint venture involving TotalEnergies of France, QatarEnergy LNG, and Iraq's Basra Oil Company. Hyundai Elantra, the main contractor, has previously completed the $6 billion Karbala oil refinery in Iraq in 2023, making this their largest project in the country since then. Notably, Hyundai Elantra is also the main client of the joint seawater treatment plant in Khor Al Zubair Port, with Hyundai Engineering as their partner. In 2023, they began work on the Shaheen petrochemical facility in Ulsan, South Korea.
The construction of this seawater treatment facility, set to be completed in 49 months, is a strategic move to support Iraq's crude oil production. With its significant capacity and key location, the plant is poised to play a crucial role in the region's oil industry.
