Hyundai Unveils FCEV INITIUM Hydrogen-Powered Concept SUV for Display at Los Angeles Auto Show, with Planned Launch in 2025
Hyundai Unveils Initium Hydrogen-Powered SUV Concept
Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled the Initium, a hydrogen-powered SUV concept, at its "Clearly Committed" event in Goyang, South Korea. The production version of the Initium is set to launch in the first half of 2025.
The Initium embodies 27 years of Hyundai's work in hydrogen technology, showcasing advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology and design. It features larger hydrogen tanks, a higher-output fuel cell stack, an enhanced battery, and a 150kW electric motor, targeting a driving range exceeding 650 km.
The SUV's design is based on a new philosophy called 'Art of Steel', which combines strong, elegant lines with an industrial aesthetic. SangYup Lee, Hyundai's Head of Global Design, described the Initium as a "solid yet sophisticated SUV-like design".
The Initium includes family-friendly features such as a spacious second row and a generous cargo area. It also boasts a unique hydrogen-specific visual identity, featuring 21-inch wheels, a sturdy roof rack, and signature "+" lighting.
One of the most innovative features of the Initium is its Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. This allows owners to tap into the car's hydrogen fuel cell to power household devices on the go, providing electricity without emitting any pollutants.
The Initium's smart route planner, designed specifically for hydrogen users, helps drivers locate nearby fueling stations along their routes. This, along with the V2L feature, demonstrates Hyundai's innovation in hydrogen technology applications.
Executive Chair Euisun Chung shared that the shift to hydrogen energy is for future generations. Hyundai reaffirms its goal to make hydrogen a go-to clean energy source with the Initium, solidifying its role as a hydrogen mobility leader.
Hyundai was the world's first automaker to mass-produce hydrogen FCEVs starting in 2018, and the Initium is a preview of its upcoming hydrogen-powered SUV. The company continues to champion hydrogen technology as an accessible and environmentally friendly energy solution for the world.
The Initium concept vehicle will be debuted globally at the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou this November. The launch of the production version of the Initium in 2025 marks a significant step in Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle line-up, aiming for zero tailpipe emissions and advancing sustainable mobility.
