India, Bhutan Unveil $454M Cross-Border Railway Plan
India and Bhutan have announced plans to build their first cross-border railway lines. The project, estimated at $454 million, will connect key economic zones in both countries and is expected to be completed in four years.
The first line will stretch 69 kilometers, linking Kokrajhar in India to Gelephu in Bhutan. This line, along with a second 20-kilometer line connecting Samtse in Bhutan to Banarhat in India, will significantly boost goods transportation between the two nations.
Both lines will be electric, designed with environmental sustainability in mind. Bhutan, prioritizing the development of Gelephu as an economic zone, hopes these lines will attract foreign investment and tourists.
The railway project, costing 34.56 billion rupees ($390 million) for the first line and 5.77 billion rupees for the second, is expected to greatly enhance connectivity and trade between India and Bhutan. Upon completion in four years, these lines will facilitate easier and more efficient transportation of goods and people.
