**Upgraded Drainage System Improves Flood Resilience in Bangkok**
In the heart of Bangkok, a significant transformation is underway in the Khlong Kled Bridge drainage system. This system, part of a larger urban water management effort, deviates from the conventional canal system in its more engineered, precise nature.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has explained that the new drainage system, currently being constructed along Sukhumvit 103 (Udomsuk Road) in the Prawet district, operates like a high-speed motorway for water. The system features a new drainage tunnel five metres above the original one, connecting to the existing intake shaft. This tunnel, fully bored and linked to the shaft, forms part of a key drainage route that diverts water from Nong Bon Lake to Khlong Bang O.
The new drainage tunnel, different from a canal, requires designated entry and exit points through shafts. This system necessitates meticulous planning, including regular clearing of canals and pipes, to function effectively in Bangkok's flood-prone environment.
The ongoing construction and improvement of the Khlong Kled Bridge drainage system also involve concrete work and drainage adjustments to enhance flood resilience in the area. These improvements aim to address long-standing flooding problems and support better traffic flow.
The tunnel running from Nong Bon to Bang Na boasts eight water intake shafts. Crews are now removing drilling equipment and installing tunnel lining panels. After completion, this modern drainage system will offer a more efficient and controlled approach to Bangkok's urban water management challenges.
In February 2022, a leak in the underground water caused severe damage to the bridge's foundations, leading to the collapse of its pilings and requiring extensive repairs. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has apologized for the inconvenience caused by the disruption on Udomsuk Road. Despite the setbacks, the project continues to progress, reflecting the city's commitment to improving its infrastructure and addressing the challenges posed by its unique geography.
