"Interstellar" becomes available on Netflix after a substantial theatrical re-release

Christopher Nolan's epic space expedition film, titled Interstellar, featuring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, is now available on Netflix after its triumphant 10th anniversary theater re-release.

The movie, directed by the acclaimed filmmaker, who collaborated on the script with his sibling, Jonathan Nolan, initially premiered in cinemas on November 5, 2014, before transitioning to a broader nationwide release on November 7, 2015.

To commemorate its 10th anniversary, Interstellar was re-released in 165 IMAX theaters across North America on December 6, 2024, promising a one-week exclusive run. However, due to the film's popularity, the re-release continued for a second week, extending to 321 IMAX screens, before concluding on December 20. According to Box Office Mojo, the re-release amassed a total of $15.2 million during this period.

As per Netflix, the film was made available on their streaming platform on January 1, 2025.

Alongside Interstellar, Christopher Nolan's mind-bending 2010 crime thriller, Inception, also joined Netflix's streaming library on the same day.

What's Interstellar About?

The official description for Interstellar goes, "Due to Earth's future uninhabitability, a former NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is entrusted with piloting a spaceship alongside a group of scientists, in search of a new habitable planet for humanity."

Matthew McConaughey plays the role of Cooper in Interstellar, while Anne Hathaway portrays Dr. Emilia Brand, daughter of renowned scientist Dr. John Brand (Michael Caine). The crew for this interstellar mission also includes scientists Doyle (Wes Bently) and Romilly (David Gyasi).

Jessica Chastain takes on the role of Murph, Cooper's grown-up daughter, in the film, while Casey Affleck depicts his matured son, Tom (Timothée Chalamet). Interstellar also features John Lithgow as Cooper's father-in-law, Donald.

Fortuitously, McConaughey and Chalamet crossed paths during the theatrical re-release of Interstellar at a college football game between the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns on December 7.

Chalamet, promoting his new Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown during his visit, shared a photo from the sidelines, captioning it, "my movie dad Cooper," complete with a smiling emoticon.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the film, Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment also released a restricted 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Collector's Edition of Interstellar.
