Inverse Notification Announces Extension of ITR Deadline to 30th September 2025
The Income Tax Department (ITD) has clarified that a viral post circulating on social media claiming an extension of the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the assessment year 2025-26 to 30 September 2025 is false.
The ITD, through its official website and social media handles, has confirmed that the deadline for filing ITRs for the assessment year 2025-26 remains 16 September 2025 as per the official announcement.
On 14 September 2025, the ITD extended the ITR filing deadline by one day, from 15 September to 16 September 2025, due to technical glitches on the e-filing portal. No further extension beyond this date has been announced so far.
Taxpayers who miss the original deadline can still file a belated return until 31 December 2025. However, filing a belated return may result in penalties, interest, disallowance of losses to be carried forward, and unavailability of certain deductions and exemptions.
