The Kia EV5, a compact electric SUV, made its debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show in 2022. Now, Kia plans to export this innovative vehicle to key global markets, including Australia, Europe, and India.

Tailored for Each Market

In Australia, the EV5 is positioned as a mid-size electric SUV, comparable in size to the petrol Kia Sportage. It comes with features tailored to local preferences, such as specific battery options and all-wheel drive (AWD) available in certain trims. Notable enhancements include an 18” alloy wheel setup, fast charging capability, LED lighting suite, panoramic sunroof, and modern comfort and safety tech like keyless entry and parking distance warning.

For Europe, while detailed modifications have not been explicitly mentioned, Kia intends to enhance its brand image by launching models like the EV4 and already existing EV5, likely with specifications meeting European standards and consumer preferences. This often includes compliance with tighter emission and safety regulations as well as adapting electric range to local driving conditions.

In India, the EV5 is part of Kia’s strategy to bolster sales through a strengthened dealer network. While specific local modifications are not stated, Indian market vehicles often undergo adaptations in price, features, and aftersales support tailored to local market demands and infrastructure.

Key Features of the Kia EV5

The interior of the Kia EV5 boasts a dual 12.3-inch continuous screen setup, with an instrument panel seamlessly blending into the infotainment screen, and an additional 5-inch climate control screen. The vehicle also supports both V2L and V2G technologies.

The EV5 uses the 800V E-GMP platform and is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. The all-wheel drive version, available for export, has a reduced acceleration time of 6.1 seconds. The vehicle has dimensions of 4615 mm in length, 1875 mm in width, and 1715 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2750 mm.

Production and Export

Production of the Kia EV5 began in April 2023 at the 4.0 intelligent manufacturing plant in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, China. Yueda Kia, the company responsible for the vehicle's production, aims to export 200,000 cars a year by 2026. In contrast, Kia exported about 86,000 cars from China in 2022, an increase of 125% over the previous year. Yueda Kia currently exports to more than 50 countries and plans to increase this to 80 countries.

Seat options in the Kia EV5 include eco-friendly recycled PET fabric and Bio-PU leather coverings. The rear seats fold fully flat, providing ample cargo space.

Kia's Growing Presence in China

In China, Kia has seen significant growth. The best year for Kia's sales in China was in 2016 when it sold 564,039 cars. However, last year, Kia only sold around 80,000 cars in China. Despite this decrease, Kia remains committed to the Chinese market and aims to expand its presence further.

The Kia EV5 was launched in China with a starting price of 20,700 USD. Kia owns 50% of Yueda Kia, with the remainder owned by two different Yueda entities. Dongfeng previously held a 25% stake in Yueda Kia but sold it in 2021.

In summary, Kia is expanding its global presence with the launch of the Kia EV5 electric SUV. The vehicle will be tailored to meet regulatory and consumer expectations in each export market, emphasizing competitive pricing and EV technology tailored to those markets.
