Ireland's Car Market Shifts Gears: Electric Car Registrations Surge 73% in September 2025
Ireland's car market is shifting gears. New electric car registrations surged by 73% in September 2025 compared to the same month last year, with a total of 1,737 units registered. The Tesla Model 3 led the pack, while the Volkswagen brand took the top spot among electric car brands.
Overall, new car registrations in Ireland increased by 9.8% in September 2025, with petrol cars still leading the market. However, electric cars are gaining traction, with a 38.8% increase in registrations so far this year compared to 2024. The top five selling car brands in Ireland in September 2025 were Toyota, Volkswagen, Skoda, Hyundai, and Kia, with the Toyota Corolla Cross being the best-selling model.
Used car imports also saw a 36.8% increase in September 2025. To support this growing trend, Brian Cooke, director of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), has called for three key measures in the 2026 budget: extending relief and the 0% Benefit-in-Kind threshold, increasing relief thresholds, and maintaining strong financial incentives for electric vehicle (EV) ownership.
The Irish car market continues to evolve, with electric vehicles making significant strides. As we look ahead, maintaining these incentives will be crucial to keep Ireland moving towards a more sustainable future.
