Italian Families Face Changing Spending Habits in 2024
Italian families are facing changing spending habits in 2024, with regional disparities and shifts in expenditure patterns. The average monthly spending remains similar to 2023 at 2,755 euros, but inflation has eroded purchasing power.
Regional differences persist, with the North-east spending 834 euros more per month than the South. Trentino-Alto Adige leads with 3,584 euros, while Puglia and Calabria have the lowest at 2,000 and 2,075 euros respectively. Milan, the most expensive region, tops food and beverage spending, although the exact amount is not specified.
Spending on restaurant services has grown by 4.1% to 162 euros per month, with the Center registering the highest increase. Young singles allocate 9.4% of their budget to such services and accommodation. Meanwhile, 31.1% of families have cut food purchases, and 35.3% have reduced beverage expenses compared to 2023.
One in three families has reduced food spending in quantity and quality. Italian-only families spend 31.8% more on groceries than those with foreign members. Despite a 2.5% price increase, food and non-alcoholic beverages still represent 19.3% of total spending.
From 2019 to 2024, family spending has increased by 7.6%, but inflation has reached 18.5%, indicating a significant erosion of real purchasing power. As Italian families adapt to changing economic conditions, regional disparities and shifts in expenditure patterns continue to shape their spending habits.
