Less infrastructure equates to more traffic congestion in Lapu-Lapu
The Lapu-Lapu City Expressway, a significant infrastructure project, is currently under construction in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. This ambitious development aims to enhance transportation connectivity within the city and stimulate economic growth.
The expressway is designed to connect the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway directly to the Mactan–Cebu International Airport (MCIA), providing a more efficient route for travellers. It will also facilitate better access between the airport and the main bridges linking Mactan Island to Cebu Island, including the Mactan–Mandaue Bridge.
The project is part of a broader urban development initiative that includes land reclamation projects for new business areas and parks, an International Convention Center, and additional bridge constructions between Mactan and Cordova. These combined projects suggest a significant push to improve transit flow and economic growth in the region.
The road widening project, a flagship initiative of Lapu-Lapu City Representative Junard "Ahong" Chan, will expand the road by approximately eight to nine meters. Notably, the compensation for affected establishments will be shouldered by Rep. Chan's congressional office.
To alleviate traffic congestion, the alignment of the Coastal Road from Barangay Pajo to Ibo is being finalized. Once completed, the diversion roads for the Lapu-Lapu City Expressway will serve key areas such as George Tampus Road, with new routes passing through Timpolok Road in Babag, as well as Kalolo and Tacan.
In addition to the expressway, Super Health Centers (SHC) are being planned to help further reduce the hospital's patient load. One such SHC is already in existence in Barangay Basak, and plans are in place to convert the old Gun-ob Barangay Hall into an outpatient facility to ease hospital congestion.
The city is also coordinating with the Department of Education Lapu-Lapu City Schools Division Superintendent to identify barangays that need additional classrooms. Rep. Chan aims to complete Phase 5 of the Lapu-Lapu City Hospital during his three-year term.
The structures affected by the road widening are primarily made of light materials, and necessary permits from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Philippine Reclamation Authority have already been secured for the Lapu-Lapu City Expressway.
As of June 2025, the construction of the Lapu-Lapu Expressway is actively underway, marking a significant step towards improving transportation connectivity and economic growth in Lapu-Lapu City.
