Lockdown Period of Ten Days - Destruction of a Bridge underway
Hot off the Press:
The A43 Shutdown in Herne, Recklinghausen, and Bochum for a Decade!
Are you ready for a major highway headache? Brace yourself, drivers, as the A43 expansion is set to test your patience for ten long days!
From June 27, 9:00 PM, until July 7, 5:00 AM, the A43 will be closed in both directions between the Recklinghausen junction on the A2 and the Bochum junction at the Ruhrpark.
Saturday mornings have been eerily quiet so far. The detour routes are surprisingly empty - probably due to the light traffic that typically graces the roads at this time. But that's all about to change as demolition work on the A43's bridge has begun in the wee hours.
What the Heck is Going On?
Autobahn Westfalen is taking charge, and they've got two small bridges below the A43 in the new Lidl warehouse at the city boundary of Bochum and Herne in their sights. These bridges need a complete ground removal, and they can only do that under full closure. Post-demolition, the gaps will be filled with earth. Moreover, they are preparing for the half-sided demolition and new construction of the Südstraße and Hibernia bridges, set for the next few months.
Motorists traveling from the south will need to follow a lengthy detour via the A40, A45, and A2 from the Bochum junction. Meanwhile, those coming from the north should brace themselves for a detour in the opposite direction.
Why the A43? Why Now?
Nope, it's not a prank - Autobahn Westfalen really means business. The main reason for this significant disruption is the removal of those two pesky bridges we mentioned earlier. And yes, they expect a little chaos - but they're counting on us, the citizens of the Ruhr area, to adapt like champs! Remember those pesky A40 closures? Well, that didn't lead to a standstill, did it? Anton Kurenbach, Autobahn Westfalen's spokesperson, is pretty confident.
In Case You Missed It:
While this closure will undoubtedly affect those traveling to or from Herne or northern Bochum, Autobahn Westfalen has got a few tricks up its sleeve. They rely on the local knowledge of the surrounding areas to navigate the detours. Depending on your destination, there are a myriad of alternative routes available to bypass the closed section, although they can't list them all. They've also been communicating the closure details well in advance to allow for more home office solutions and easier trip planning.

The A43 Expansion: A Lengthy, Intricate Project
The A43 expansion project involves a series of significant infrastructure upgrades, including bridges and tunnels. Due to the complexity and import of the closed stretch, drivers should anticipate considerable detours and additional travel time. For detailed alternative route guidance and traffic management during the closure, check local traffic reports and official information from Autobahn GmbH Westfalen as the closure dates draw near.
Potential delays for Buses and Trains too!
The ten-day closure may also cause delays for public transportation. The transport company HCR expects "significant detour traffic in the Herne city area," and they warn of "possible delays and cancellations on all bus lines in Herne."
Stay tuned for updates and adapt accordingly, fellow travelers! We'll all get through this together.

Furthermore, the transportation industry could face significant challenges, with potential disruptions in the movement of goods and people across the affected region.
