Lower Saxony's Plant-Based Food Production Doubles in Five Years
The demand for plant-based foods has surged in Lower Saxony, with a staggering 130.4% increase in production from 2019 to 2024. This growth is particularly notable in the category of 'Other food (excluding beverages)', where vegetarian or vegan food preparations resembling sausage accounted for 5% of the production value, totaling 276 million euros.
In 2019, around 18.2 million kilograms of vegan and vegetarian foods were produced in the region. By 2024, this figure had soared to 41.9 million kilograms. This significant increase demonstrates a doubling of production in the food industry of Lower Saxony over the five-year period. Notably, 2023 saw a temporary decrease of 6.1%, but production swiftly rebounded to reach record highs in 2024.
The 'Other Foods' category, excluding beverages, has shown particular interest in plant-based sausage-like products. These accounted for 5% of the production value in this category, contributing 276 million euros to the industry's growth from 2019 to 2024.
