LS Energy Solutions Launches Big Rock, 200 MW/400 MWh Energy Storage in California
LS Energy Solutions has launched commercial operations at its latest project, Big Rock, a 200 MW / 400 MWh energy storage system in Imperial County, California. The project, developed in partnership with Gore Street Energy Storage Fund, is the fund's first for the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) market.
The Big Rock site consists of 137 containerized battery energy storage systems, each designed for a two-hour duration. These systems are powered by LS Energy Solutions' modular lithium-ion battery, LS-ES AiON-ESS, available in two-hour and four-hour designs and power ratings from 400 kW to 1.3 MW. The project has secured a 12-year resource adequacy contract with the CAISO grid operator, demonstrating the region's commitment to reliable energy.
LS Energy Solutions, with over 1 GW of storage deployed across 250 projects, has joined forces with Mitsubishi Power, Vistra Energy, and the Imperial Irrigation District for the Big Rock project. Gore Street Energy Storage Fund, which acquired the site in February 2023, has expanded its operational portfolio to 753.4 MW / 924.1 MWh of energy storage assets across Texas, Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, and now California.
The Big Rock project, now operational, is providing vital resource adequacy services to the CAISO electrical grid. This marks a significant milestone for both LS Energy Solutions and Gore Street Energy Storage Fund, showcasing their commitment to expanding and strengthening energy storage solutions in the region.
