Partying with the Rich and Famous: Villa Once Held by Imprisoned Billionaire Benko Up for Grabs

Step into the lavish world of René Benko, the fallen Austrian billionaire, as his luxurious Lake Garda villa, Villa Ansaldi, goes under the hammer. Social media isn't required to get a glimpse of the glamourous events that took place in this grand estate, boasting a helicopter landing pad, yacht dock, and numerous ancillary buildings.

Tina Turner, Niki Lauda, and Silvio Berlusconi (the former Italian Prime Minister) were among the celebrities who left their mark on the villa's guestbook. This four-storey estate, now a portion of insolvency liquidation, hosted Benko's extravagant 40th birthday bash in 2017, which reportedly cost half a million euros.

The Signa Group, Benko's real estate empire, imploded in 2023, leaving a significant mark as the largest insolvency case in Austrian history. Since 2025, Benko has been serving his sentence. He stands accused of numerous offenses ranging from fraud to insolvency and tax crimes. The numerous Signa Group creditors continue to demand billions from him.

To fulfill a portion of these claims, the villa's inventory is being auctioned off by the Signa Group's insolvency administrator. This includes personal items, such as the celebrity guestbook or an old newspaper from Benko's birthday on May 20, 1977, along with mundane items like used kitchenware and doormats, and even a toilet brush. Prices for the items range from as low as one euro for old landline phones, to several thousand euros for designer furniture.

The Enigma of Ownership

The operational aspects of the villa can be inferred from the professional catering setup, fitness studio inventory, and office furniture/vehicles. You can even find a riding lawnmower or a mobile tank filled with 450 liters of helicopter fuel. A comprehensive wine collection is also part of the sale.

Companies and private individuals can place their bids online via the Austrian auction house Aurena. A viewing of the items will be held at Lake Garda on July 5 by prior appointment. The auction concludes on July 14.

The villa's true ownership remains a mystery, despite the auction of its contents. Officially, the Signa Group, along with René Benko, merely rents the luxury property for a yearly rent of 240,000 euros, to a Luxembourg company whose owner remains undisclosed. Austria's media speculates that this company could be one of the numerous foundations controlling Benko's wealth outside of creditors' reach.
