Madrid's Star Bellingham Determines Duration of Imposed Red Card Ban

Jude Bellingham, the prominent midfielder for Real Madrid, is grappling with the aftermath of a two-match suspension he received following his red card in the club's 1-1 draw against Osasuna. The suspension stems from a referee's belief that Bellingham uttered an offensive phrase directed at him during a heated moment in the game.

The conflict ensued when Madrid took a 1-0 lead through Kylian Mbappe, only for Bellingham to receive his marching orders around the 30-minute mark. The incident triggered a debate in Spain over the offensive connotations of certain phrases, with many sources, including renowned Spanish outlet MARCA, reporting on the suspension.

Bellingham and his head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, have defended the player's actions, contending that Bellingham's utterance was actually a frustrated "f--k off" rather than the alleged "f--k you." Ancelotti even took the opportunity to speak beside the media, clarifying his stance on the matter.

"We started well and finished well with one less. The red card with Jude, I don’t think he understood him well. He tells him to ‘f--k off’, not ‘f--k you’ [in English]," Ancelotti commented.

However, Bellingham himself offered a more detailed account of the situation when he addressed the press afterwards. Emphasizing the misunderstanding that transpired, the midfielder declared his actions to be more in line with a Spanish phrase often used to express frustration, akin to "f--k."

"It’s clear that a mistake has been made, there has been a communication error," Bellingham asserted.

"I don’t want to say what I said again, but it’s more like ‘joder’ (a Spanish phrased often said to mean ‘f--k’), and I want everyone to know that I didn’t mean to put the team in a situation to leave them with ten men.

"If you review the video you can see that it is not the same as what the [referee’s] minutes say. I hope that the Federation takes it into account. I haven’t insulted anyone, you can see it clearly in the video.

“I don’t even say it directly to the referee, I say it to myself. It was a lack of understanding, a clear mistake by the referee," the number 5 reiterated.

The suspension of Bellingham, an integral part of Madrid's squad, comes at a challenging time for the team, as they currently trail title rivals FC Barcelona in the La Liga standings. The club has signaled its intention to challenge the suspension, and Madrid will be eager to ensure Bellingham's presence in the Champions League playoffs against Manchester City, set for the Bernabeu on Wednesday. However, Bellingham will be missing influential La Liga matches against Girona and Real Betis.
