Major arterial road in Hamburg to undergo extended closure - ahead of scheduled timeline
Full Closure of Elbchaussee in Hamburg from July 10th, Three Weeks Earlier Than Planned
Beginning July 10th, one of Hamburg's main arteries, the Elbchaussee, will undergo a full closure for comprehensive renovation works that are anticipated to last until early 2022.
The Elbchaussee, a significant traffic artery in Hamburg's western district, will be inaccessible to motorists for several months, three weeks earlier than initially scheduled due to the need for increased space to replace aging water pipes beneath the road.
Traffic will be diverted via federal road 431 to maintain the flow of vehicles. Drivers should anticipate and plan for possible delays, especially during peak hours. Notably, this area is already congested due to the construction of the A7 highway overpass.
Large LED displays, strategically placed to alert drivers in advance, will count down the remaining time until the closure. The closure is expected to be lifted in January or February of next year, with one-way traffic regulations to be imposed depending on the progress of construction.
Following the completion of the second section of the Elbchaussee, work will commence in October 2026 on the remaining section between Parkstraße and Hohenzollernring.
It is worth noting that the Norderelbbridge will be partially closed on weekends. The comprehensive renovation of the Elbchaussee began in spring 2021, with the first section between Manteuffelstraße and Parkstraße completed in December 2023.
Hamburg residents and emergency vehicles will have designated access to their streets during the closure. Motorists are advised to utilize Hamburg’s official traffic and construction website, the HVV app, and local radio traffic reports to keep up-to-date with traffic conditions and potential changes in detour routes.
This closure necessitates the use of clearly marked detour routes. For eastbound traffic (towards Hamburg city center), the primary detour will utilize the Blankeneser Landstraße (Route 431). Westbound traffic (towards Blankenese/Elbvororte) should divert via Süderstraße and then onto Blankeneser Landstraße (Route 431). Public transportation lines have been rerouted via the detour streets.
During the closure period, travelers are advised to check live traffic conditions and possible changes in detour routes if they plan to traverse these districts.
The full closure of Elbchaussee in Hamburg from July 10th will affect not only the local transportation system but also industries such as automotive and transportation, as the detour routes might cause unforeseen delays in supply chains. Changes in the city's traffic flow due to the closure might also impact financial sectors, particularly those that rely on timely deliveries or real-time traffic data.
