Major Fire Engulfs Russia's Yaroslavnefteorgsintes Refinery, Fuel Shortages Feared
A major fire has engulfed the Yaroslavnefteorgsintes refinery in Russia, one of the country's largest with a processing capacity of 15 million tons of crude oil per year. The blaze, which broke out today, has raised concerns about fuel shortages in the country.
The fire at the Yaroslavl refinery comes amidst a series of drone attacks by Ukraine on Russian oil refineries. Ukraine has effectively shut down around a quarter of all Russian oil refineries, with about 70 percent of the refinery shutdowns in late September being attributed to these drone strikes. The latest known Ukrainian drone attack method involved multiple drones targeting major Russian oil facilities, aiming to cause explosions and fires to disrupt fuel supply and Russia's war financing.
The fire at the Yaroslavnefteorgsintes refinery is reported to have purely technical causes and is not the result of drone attacks. However, the timing coincides with Ukraine's increasing focus on targeting the oil industry to disrupt the fuel supply to the Russian military and to make it more difficult to finance the war through the export of oil products.
The fire at the Yaroslavnefteorgsintes refinery, regardless of its cause, adds to the fuel supply concerns in Russia. With refinery shutdowns reaching historic highs due to Ukrainian drone strikes, the country faces a challenging situation in maintaining its fuel supply.
