Manufacturing workforce saw a growth for the first time in 2020

The manufacturing sector in Britain continues to show positive development compared to August 2020, with approximately 5.5 million employees working in the sector in September 2021. However, the sector has experienced a decrease of 3.0% compared to the same month last year. This decline can be attributed to several industries within the manufacturing sector, including data processing equipment and electronic and optical products, motor vehicles and vehicle parts, and metal products, which all saw decreases in the number of employees ranging from -0.9% to -3.6%. The production and processing of metals experienced the largest decrease (-5.8%), while the production of chemical products saw an increase of +1.6% compared to September 2020. The most recent data indicate that the number of employees in the chemical production sector has decreased compared to the same month of the previous year due to ongoing production declines and order shortages in the British chemical industry in 2025. In September 2021, the number of employees in the manufacturing sector with 50 or more employees slightly increased by 0.2%, while the number of employees in the same category remained the same compared to August 2021. Despite the positive development compared to August 2020, the hours worked across all sectors in September 2020 decreased by 3.9% compared to September 2019, despite having one more working day. The wages for employees in the manufacturing sector in September 2020 were around 22.5 billion euros, a decrease of 4.3% compared to the same month last year. Short-time work benefits received by employees are not included in the reported wages. The sector continues to face challenges, but the ongoing positive development compared to August 2020 offers hope for a recovery in the coming months.
