"Mildenberger's resilience shown through his return after the catastrophic flood"
Rudersberg, a charming town in the Rems-Murr district of Germany, has been making steady progress in its recovery following the devastating flood in June 2024. However, the status of two key establishments, Edeka and fashion discounter NKD, remains uncertain.
One of the most affected businesses was the Mildenberger Bakery, which has been a staple in Rudersberg since 2004. The bakery, founded in 1950 and operating more than three dozen branches, was destroyed during the flood, with water reaching nearly two meters through the ground floor. Despite the setbacks, the bakery is planning to reopen, offering modernized rooms and a larger selection of baked goods. The specific reopening date, however, is yet to be confirmed.
The tiles for the bakery's renovation arrived recently, but the craftsmen had no more time to install them before the planned reopening. The butcher shop Hinderer, which was also destroyed by the flood, has since reopened in November 2024, following intensive renovation work.
Other businesses in Rudersberg have returned to normal operation. The inn "Krone," which was flooded by about one and a half meters of water, has been open again since fall. The doctor's practices and the Wieslauf pharmacy at market square 3 have been in regular operation since spring.
However, the status of Edeka and NKD remains unclear. Edeka's spokesperson, Florian Heitzmann, stated that their goal is to reopen the market as soon as possible. Edeka Südwest is working on a redesign of the interior and a concept tailored to local needs. As for NKD, no opening date has been set, and the store remains empty opposite the bakery in Rudersberg.
The former fruit and vegetable store Gruber now offers a new range with "Bücher ABC," indicating a shift in business focus. Meanwhile, the former book and stationery store Donner remains empty.
Rudersberg's mayor, Raimon Ahrens, confirmed that the time is still open for NKD's restart. The recovery of Rudersberg and its businesses continues, but the wait for the return of Edeka and NKD lingers. The community remains hopeful and resilient, looking forward to the day when these establishments reopen their doors.
