In the year 2023, Meta reported approximately 4 billion monthly active users across its array of platforms.

Multitudes of individuals encounter difficulties in accessing the Facebook and Instagram applications.

"We've detected a technical glitch affecting some users' access to our platforms. We're actively working to resolve this issue and restore normal operations as swiftly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused," Meta Newsroom stated on a particular Wednesday afternoon.

Both WhatsApp and Instagram acknowledged the disruptions through the same day, with numerous users reporting they cannot access Meta's platforms.

By mid-afternoon on Wednesday, Downdetector, a platform where users can report issues, had logged about 69,000 complaints concerning Instagram. Facebook had approximately 105,000 outage reports, Facebook Messenger around 14,000, and WhatsApp around 12,500. Even Threads, a competitor, witnessed an upsurge in outage complaints. It's essential to note that Downdetector's reports are self-reported, meaning they may not represent the full scope of the challenges.

Several significant tech outages have occurred this year. Back in late November, a massive Microsoft Outlook and Teams failure impacted office workers. On a much larger scale, in the spring of 2024, a widely publicized IT outage involving CrowdStrike's software led to air travel delays, hospital disruptions, and estimated direct losses for Fortune 500 companies to the tune of over $5 billion.

Although the consequences may not be identical, Meta's platforms are highly popular among social media users. The company reported a total of 3.98 billion monthly active users across its portfolio in 2023.

The disruptions on Meta's platforms, including WhatsApp and Instagram, significantly impacted their business operations and user experience. The company's ongoing efforts to resolve the issue are critical to minimizing financial losses and maintaining user satisfaction.
