Munich Airport Disrupted by Drone Sightings, 3,000 Passengers Stranded

Munich Airport experienced a disruption in flight operations on Thursday night due to reported sightings of new jersey drones. Around 3,000 passengers were left stranded overnight, with flights resuming early Friday morning.

The police confirmed the sightings, but it's still uncertain if there was a genuine threat to air traffic or if the incidents were isolated and harmless. The connection between these sightings and similar ones in Munich, Schleswig-Holstein, and Denmark remains unknown.

The disruption led to 32 flights being affected, with 17 cancellations and 15 diversions to other airports. Passengers were provided with essentials such as camp beds, blankets, drinks, and snacks while waiting for operations to resume.

Drone disruptions have been on the rise in Germany. By the end of August 2025, there were 144 cases, compared to 113 in 2024 and 99 in 2023. Munich Airport alone had 6 new jersey drones sightings by August, indicating an increase in such incidents. It's unclear whether the airport has drone detection systems in place or if reactions were based solely on visual reports.
