National Park Service to Temporarily Close GW Parkway Southbound Lanes for Tree Maintenance
The National Park Service is set to temporarily close southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway for essential tree maintenance work. The closures, scheduled for October 1, 2, 6, and 7, aim to minimize disruption to commuters traveling to Washington, D.C.
The work, initiated by Superintendent Jerry Garcia, will take place between Mount Vernon and south of Alexandria. It forms part of larger tree care efforts along the parkway, which serves as a major commuter route for Northern Virginia residents. Southbound traffic will be diverted onto Park Terrace Drive during the work periods, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.
The National Park Service has planned the maintenance work to avoid peak rush hour traffic periods, ensuring minimal disruption to commuters. The George Washington Memorial Parkway, which connects Alexandria to the Beltway, will remain partially closed during the specified dates and times.
