Animation Workers Unionize and Push for Expansion

In a significant move, production workers at SpindleHorse Studio in Burbank have unionized with the Animation Guild. This follows a request for voluntary recognition made by 60 workers on Wednesday. The unionized team, comprising animators, storyboard artists, and other animation professionals, have worked on popular TV series such as "The Owl House" and "Amphibia."

The unionization effort includes production workers, including production assistants, production supervisors, and script coordinators. SpindleHouse's unionization comes as evidence of the Animation Guild's efforts to expand its reach into production roles. This push is timely, given the development of generative AI tools that could potentially disrupt the animation space.

The unionization bid is not limited to SpindleHorse. A group of 12 production workers on the movie "Ted" have also requested voluntary recognition to join both the Animation Guild and the Editors Guild. However, no comment has been received from NBCUniversal regarding this unionization attempt for the "Ted" production workers.

Kelly Simmons, a production coordinator on "Ted," has acknowledged the Animation Guild's aggressive unionization of animation production workers. Meanwhile, no comment has been received from Netflix regarding the unionization attempt for Netflix Animation Studios workers.

The Animation Guild's efforts extend beyond "Ted" and SpindleHouse. It has launched an attempt to unionize feature production workers at Netflix Animation Studios. The union's efforts are part of a broader attempt to expand its reach inside the animation production space.

Notably, the unionized workers at SpindleHouse have also worked on shows including Amazon Prime's "Hazbin Hotel" and "Helluva Boss." They have also contributed to Netflix's upcoming projects based on Roald Dahl's works and the 2023 film Leo.

The unionization drive comes at a time when the fashion industry is also in the spotlight. No prior context was provided regarding Victoria Beckham's emotional response to forging a path in fashion in a Netflix docuseries trailer. However, it seems that the union movement is gaining momentum across various creative industries.

As the landscape of the animation industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the unionization efforts impact the workforce and the quality of animation produced.
