Netflix's 'NFL Christmas Gameday' Breaks Major Streaming Viewership Milestones
In a statement released on Thursday, Netflix declared that the NFL's Christmas Gameday event on Wednesday saw record-breaking viewership, with an estimated 64.8 million viewers in the USA, as per Nielsen.
The game lineup included the Chiefs vs. Steelers and the Ravens vs. Texans, with the Chiefs triumphing over the Steelers 29-10 and the Ravens dominating the Texans 31-2. Each game garnered an average of over 24 million viewers, with Nielsen recording 24.1 million average viewers for the Chiefs-Steelers matchup and 24.3 million for the Ravens-Texans game.
Citing Nielsen, Netflix declared that these contests held the title for the "most-streamed NFL games in U.S. history."
Hans Schroeder, NFL's executive vice president of media distribution, expressed delight in Netflix's inaugural Christmas Gameday venture, stating, "Fans from all 50 states and over 200 countries worldwide watched some of the league's top performers alongside an awe-inspiring Beyoncé performance, marking a historic day for the NFL."
The NFL and Netflix have agreed on a three-year contract, with the NFL streaming two games annually on Christmas Gameday, starting at $150 million per year. The first of these annual events was set in motion on Netflix.
Beyoncé's Halftime Show Boosts Viewership Numbers
Despite the matches averaging over 24 million viewers, Beyoncé's captivating halftime show, affectionately named the Beyoncé Bowl, drew an impressive 27 million viewers during the Ravens vs. Texans game.
During the pre-game show for Netflix's NFL Christmas Gameday, Mariah Carey also graced the stage with her presence.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix's Chief Content Officer, expressed gratitude for their partnership with the NFL and their on-air talent, while praising Beyoncé and Mariah Carey's performances, describing the record-breaking day as the "best Christmas gift we could have given our members."
Netflix also acknowledged the popularity of #BeyonceBowl on social media, which surged to the top spot on Twitter's worldwide trending charts as Beyoncé commenced her performance.
On December 31, Netflix plans to release further global viewership statistics and additional U.S. insights, providing a comprehensive analysis of their NFL Christmas Gameday performance.
